Serving at The Banquet

October 6, 2009

Banquet Serving was a huge success!

Thank you to all who donated (including our Sunday School) and those who helped with our service project on October 24, serving at The Banquet in Sioux Falls.  Twenty-two Christ Lutheran members and friends teamed up with a similar number from Jasper Lutheran  Church of Jasper, MN.  We served a turkey noodle hot dish dinner to 302 guests, including 46 children.  Our workers were included in that number, so there were about 265 hungry people that came for that free meal.  On weekdays the evening meal is served, but on Saturdays the meal is from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.  The Banquet is closed on Sundays, when a different church group serves meals for the hungry.  Some of our high school youth had made fleece blankets which were made available free of charge to families with young children.  They were greatly appreciated, and were quickly claimed.  The staff mentioned that they would also be glad to receive winter coats, hats, and mittens–especially for children–as long as they are clean and in usable condition.  They also make donated books (particularly children’s books) and recent magazines available free for their guests.

UPDATE:  Lutheran Aid to Medicine in Bangladesh

Rural Bangladeshi women do indeed live in a culture quite different from the abundant lifestyle we enjoy in rural Minnesota.  At the “Challenges of Bangladeshi Women” program on November 15th some of our Christ Lutheran women tried on Bangladeshi clothes and ground raw peanuts into peanut butter in order to experience the ways of women living on the other side of the globe.

Sisters, Linda Engebretson, Nancy Laible, and Karen Tommeraasen, visited the LAMB hospital and school last year to make personal contacts with people our church has supported for the last six years.  During those years our Christ Lutheran Community Outreach Committee has sponsored a fundraiser to help pay tuition costs for poor native children, who can learn English at the Christian LAMB school.  This education is critical for young people to rise above the poverty they live in, to become productive people.

This year’s Lunch for LAMB fundraiser generated enough dollars to send four elementary students to another year of school.  We thank the ELCA Women of Christ Lutheran and Faith Lutheran for helping with the program, and we thank all of you who contributed financially to the future success of our LAMB students!

Your ambassadors for Christ,

Karen and her sisters, Linda and Nancy
